Welcome to the beautiful city of Sacramento! Now that you’re all settled in to your new home, it’s time to start enjoying all the benefits of everyday life in California’s state capital. Here are a few tips to get your explorations underway. Once you’ve sampled a little of what Sacramento has to offer, you’ll wonder why you ever wanted to live anywhere else.
California State Railroad Museum
What better place to begin than at this gem of a museum? While it will be especially appreciated by the youngest members of the family, visitors of any age will find much to savor here. A true celebration of the unique history of the Golden State.
Sutter’s Fort
Keep the history vibe flowing with a jaunt to the oldest restored fort in the country. Sutter’s Fort captures the spirit of the Old West during the time of the great gold rush, and offers many special events that are sure to delight the whole family. If you have a celebration of your own planned, consider hosting it at one of their Pioneer Dinners. Your guests will be talking about it long afterward.
American River Bicycle Trail
Ready for a little exercise? Get up close and personal with your new surroundings on a bike ride through the city. This trail is reserved exclusively for non-motorized use, and provides a great way to familiarize yourself with the settings. Along the way, you’ll no doubt pick up some other ideas about things you’d like to see.
The Underground Tasting Room
This venue is a hip and happening wine tasting room located in the heart of Old Sacramento. In addition to their award-winning pours, they also offer a selection of gourmet vinegars, dips, and other accoutrements. Start with a tour of the grounds to work up your thirst. Be aware that the winery is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan accordingly.
The Sacramento Zoo
Even if your take on zoos is an unfavorable one, you should give this one a try. This nonprofit has been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, an organization devoted to animal welfare. In 2016, the Sacramento Zoo — now celebrating its 90th year — donated $150,000 to wildlife conservation efforts, globally as well as locally.
Loch Leven Lakes
Loch Leven is a good option for a day when you’re feeling energetic, as this network of hiking trails covers more than ten miles, and the sights will keep you from ever wanting to leave. With so much ground to cover, you’re sure to find more than one quiet spot to stop and plan your next adventure. Go on any bright and sunny day — in Sacramento, these are easy enough to come by.
This list provides only a sampling of what the city has in store for those lucky enough to call it home. Again, congratulations on your recent move, and welcome to Sacramento!
